Pauses: Free time and Pause¶
At the end of the status line, two buttons put Sioul on hold, for two different moments. Free time, with a flower, is for a good moment you want to take: the weather is fine now, the energy is there now. Pause, apart from it at the very end, is for a moment that is too much. They look different and do different things, so that one is never taken for the other.
Both act on your day's plan: when today's work ends, how much today holds, and what goes to later days.
Sioul is not an emergency service. It does not watch you, and it acts only when you press one of them.
Free time¶
Press Free time and now is leisure, whatever the hour, until you press it again.
- Who reaches you: your safe senders' calls and messages, their mail shown without a notification, and your Always through people; Nothing at all, in the status line's menu or on Free time's card in What reaches you, keeps even your safe senders away this time. Doses and the codes you asked for still come. What waits, and what still comes: What reaches you, by time.
- What is offered: the Tasks page shows "Free time" and, under "If you want:", your own leisure items, in the order you made them. Nothing to finish, no next step, no timer. Movement and exercise are among them unless you turn Offer movement and exercise off in Settings ▸ Pauses; with Even days on (for an illness that limits your energy), they are off unless you turn them on.
- A focus session running stops when you press it, and counts; Sioul offers a line on where you stopped.
- The night comes first: Free time ends by itself when your night begins (or at midnight without one), and a nap in it is a nap.
- While it lasts, the plan already lays today as if you came back now, the end of work moved.
The end of the work day¶
When Free time takes some of your working hours, the end of today's work moves later by as much, and Sioul says it once as you come back: "Today, work runs until 19:00." Then:
- As much as it took: the working time Free time took, as the plan counts room, without the meals, naps and events in it. Free time outside your working hours moves nothing; two in a day add up.
- It never goes past an hour before you wind down for the night, your latest end of work (two hours after your usual end, unless you set Latest end of work in Settings ▸ Pauses), the room the evening's time for you needs before the night, or midnight. It goes around the evening's events, meals and admin hours.
- Only light steps go after your usual end; the day holds no more than before: what no longer fits goes to the next days, as the plan always lays it.
- Keep my usual end, beside that sentence or in the status line's menu, leaves the end where it was, no reason asked: "Work ends at 17:00, as usual." Turn The end of work moves off in the settings to make it always so.
- Sioul ends it: at the moved end, work rests, as after any work day. Done for today ends it earlier, as any day.
- Nothing is counted: no hours owed, no countdown, no record of your pauses.
Pause¶
Set it up on a calm day¶
In Settings ▸ Pauses, take your time:
- What comes during a pause: doses, your events' alarms and Sioul's reminders before them, the codes you asked for, and your Always through people's calls and messages; the rest waits until you come back. It is the pause's card in Settings ▸ What reaches you; there, Later for Doses ▸ Pause makes dose reminders wait until you come back, reminded once then.
- What helps you: in your own words, one thing a line. A line with a link or a file's path opens it from the pause: a playlist, a folder of photos, an app's page.
- A line for the pause: one line of yours, shown on the screen.
- Breathing guide: off unless you turn it on; then a slow shape to breathe with, shown only when you tap it, the breath out longer than the breath in, at the pace you set.
- Coming back: the rest of the day lighter (as a hazy day), no more work that day, or as planned.
- Numbers for: the country whose emergency number and crisis line show during a pause; unless you choose, the country of your phone numbers.
- Try the pause screen shows it as it will be. Nothing is held.
Press it¶
Pause asks nothing. Everything Sioul shows is held, on all your devices: nothing new on screen, no notification but dose reminders (unless you chose otherwise), your events' own reminders and alarms, the codes you asked for, and your Always through people's calls and messages (What reaches you, by time). Free time, if it was on, ends there. A focus session running stops and counts. Today's end of work stays your usual one, even if Free time had moved it: the work of the paused hours goes to later days, never into your evening. The phone itself stays free: calls, other apps, emergency calls.
On a phone, Pause is also among the quick settings, and at a long press on Sioul's icon: both open Sioul on the pause, and never end it. On a locked phone, the quick setting asks to unlock first.
The screen¶
Sioul's window is covered with a few lines: "Paused. Sioul is keeping everything on hold: mail, tasks, messages. Nothing new will show here until you come back. Sioul asks nothing of you until then." Under them: your line, What helps you (your list, folded until you open it), the breathing guide if you turned it on, and one quiet line with the emergency number and the crisis line of your country, one tap to call each; Other numbers unfolds the rest. One button, Come back: no code, no question.
Coming back¶
"You are back. Nothing was lost." The rest of the day is as you chose in the settings:
- Lighter, as a hazy day, unless you chose otherwise: today holds no more than a hazy day (How is today?), less room and one heavy step at most. "The rest of today is lighter.", while today's work is not over.
- No more work today: the work day closes, as with Done for today. "Work waits until tomorrow at 09:00."
- As planned: nothing changes.
When tomorrow is a working day, "Tomorrow can be lighter too.", with Lighten tomorrow, which makes tomorrow lighter, as a hazy day; doing nothing changes nothing. What was held comes back slowly: the Porch opens at your next admin hours (else your next working hours, else tomorrow morning), or when you open it. Nothing asks what happened, nothing rates it, and closing the day in the evening does not mention it.
For ten seconds the status line offers Undo: as if the pause had not been pressed.
Sioul keeps only when the last pause began and ended; Forget the last pause, in the settings, takes even that away.
Telling them apart¶
| Free time | Pause | |
|---|---|---|
| For | a good moment you choose | a moment that is too much |
| Who reaches you | your safe senders, or no one | no one; dose reminders; on a phone, your starred contacts if you chose so |
| The window | as usual, leisure in view | covered, a few lines |
| Work | the end of the day moves later, within limits | goes to later days, never into the evening |
| After | work until the moved end, light steps only past the usual one | the rest of today lighter, closed or as planned; tomorrow lighter if you ask |
| It asks | nothing; one key keeps your usual end | nothing |
From Free time, Keep my usual end turns it into a pause that moves nothing: pressed at a bad moment, it never costs you an evening.
Notifications and do-not-disturb¶
During a pause and in Free time, Sioul's own notifications wait on all your devices, and each device silences itself as far as its system lets it. What waits and what still comes: the pause's and Free time's cards in What reaches you; what each phone and computer does: Do not disturb on every device.
What Sioul does not do¶
- It sends nothing: no message, no call, no location, to anyone.
- It does not watch you and cannot tell how you are: nothing starts a pause but your press.
- It is not a medical tool and not an emergency service. In danger, call the emergency number of your country; the pause's screen shows it.
